What is psychotherapy and how it works?

Psychotherapy today is a recognized and scientifically proven method of coping with human suffering. It is a process of relieving from distress that happens in different fields at the same time. The fields can include: better self-understanding, building up one's personality and self-esteem, strengthening yourself, recognizing origins of current problems in one's history of life, observing and understanding these current difficulties, experiencing yourself in a relationship with a therapist, experiencing someone?s attention, care, respect and goodwill, as well as learning and practicing new behavior.

When to come to a therapist?


Distress is individual, we all experience it differently: some of us suffer from melancholy, disappointment in themselves or others; some feel disaffection, bitterness, for others it is long lasting helplessness or frustration. Many people often feel frightened, as they were in undefined danger. Long lasting stress, living under constant pressure of inner or outer expectations frequently becomes unbearable- that also is a form of suffering. Everybody copes with problems or difficulties on a daily basis, but this is suffering that doesn?t let us enjoy life as we would like to. The distress brought by current problems or the one we put up with for a long time is a good reason to begin psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is effective in dealing with life crises (often related to different kinds of losses) but also in treatment of depression, anxiety, phobias, obsessions and compulsions, addictions, personality disorders, interpersonal difficulties occurring in private and professional life, problems with stress handling, eating disorders, sleeplessness and psychosomatics (where stress manifests in constant health problems). Psychotherapy supports the pharmacological treatment of schizophrenia and delusional disorders. You can call us and make an appointment the moment when you realize you need a change.

What are the most often reasons for consultation?

Our clients usually ask for a consultation because of a loss that is difficult to bear. These losses are often related to separation or divorce, sometimes the death of an important person, but also involve difficulties in private or professional relationships or unaccepted loneliness. The number of clients come to a therapist because of the feeling of being stuck in life, when due to unknown reasons they cannot make any change in an inconvenient life situation.

How the process of psychotherapy is arranged in our center?

Our team works in a humanistic approach, integrating a basic method with techniques from other psychotherapy approaches, such as existential therapy, Gestalt, or cognitive-behavioral therapy. We seek for different ways of understanding a problem and take an advantage of various instruments and techniques of helping as to adjust our offer precisely to the specific needs, difficulties and suffering of a client, so we can serve her/him in the best possible way. Psychotherapy is proceeded by psychological consultation which help the client to assess and decide of what sort and form of support he/she requires, or whether he/she does really want to start psychotherapy. Sometimes the decision of beginning psychotherapy becomes a natural choice after a brief psychological intervention . It is difficult to assess the length of a psychotherapy process, it depends on specific needs and expectations of the client as well as willingness, motivation and internal qualities. In opposite to psychological support or crisis interventions psychotherapy is however a long process that requires time. In our center individual psychotherapy has a form of fifty-minute sessions that are scheduled once a week at the same time and place. Ending psychotherapy, our clients declare many positive changes that they observe, mainly related to self-image, image of other people and an increased sense of influence on their life.
